Andrea Minini’s Animals in Moiré

Andrea Minini is a graphic designer-slash-illustrator from Milan, Italy. He is known for his minimalist yet very complex and stunning designs. Andrea’s simple and symmetrical style is a beacon for the saying

Less is more.

Recently, one his projects called “Animals in Moiré” caught the attention of many illustration savvy like us. It is a personal project which consists a series of black and white animal illustrations.

Now these are not your basic animal illustrations, but Andrea experimented on using lines to achieve the shape and complexity of these creatures. The symmetrical and intersecting lines created the effect called Moiré. A Moiré or a Moiré pattern is a secondary evident pattern created when two identical and transparent patterns were put on top of each other and are rotated/displaced from each other. Moiré patterns are often associated with television screens as seen in the photography project of Stephan Tillmans.

Using Adobe Illustrator, Minini’s elegant lines are collected and create stark and moody black and white animals. Its not just an interesting stylistic choice, but each design is enhanced by his strong graphic sensibilities. Seeing the potential for slithering lines to form together in creation of a snake is one thing, but understanding the form so as to subtly create a colony (or cloud as they are also referred to in groups) of sleeping bats is an intelligent, innate choice.  (via colossal)
