The Impact of Online Chat Sites and Social Networking

It seems that everyone is busy displaying their lives online these days. It’s very likely that you and most people you know have accounts on social media sites that are used daily. We were taught to never talk to strangers, but Chat Roulette and other chat sites seem to be making it a viable way to pass the time. A chatroulette infographic was recently released which outline the huge impact of social media and communication.

First of all, 67 percent of all adults who use the internet visit social networking sites. Millions of users go online everyday, so this statistic translates into a truly amazing number. 91 percent of online adults use social networking sites regularly and 98 percent of online users between ages 18 and 24 use some form of social networking.

Of these users, which gender uses social networking more- the men or the women? Many people will think women tend to be especially talkative and would use these services more. Women do use social networking sites more (71 percent of U.S. social networking site users), but not by much. 62 percent of males also use these sites. In fact, 84 percent of all Americans spend some time texting and using social networks. Mobile phones have contributed to more than just texting, though, as 15 percent of U.S. mobile users’ time was spent using social networking apps during first quarter 2013. Unsurprisingly, many Americans try to access their beloved networks at their place of employment, though Americans between 25-34 years of age were found more likely to play with social media on the job.

Has all this screen time negatively impacted our personal interactions? Around 40 percent surveyors stated they spend more time socializing online than they do in person. Some of this is due to the availability of social networking and how it can be used nearly anywhere. Additionally, 25 percent of adults who use the internet reported that using social networks have boosted their confidence. Not all individuals online visit online chat sites or services like Chat Roulette, but instead interact with friends and connect to past acquaintances which can be powerful social experiences. About 24 percent of Americans and 28 percent of Britons admitted to lying or exaggerating information they post to social networking sites. For this reason, it’s most commonly known that the sites may not always bring out the best in people. Another 24 percent of users also reported missing important moments because they were distracted by social networks.

For businesses, social networking has been a new source for generating sales, 70 percent of adult social networking users shop online and 53 percent follow at least one brand. This is smart strategy from a business standpoint, as social networks have taken over the internet. It was also noted that 20 percent more time was spent at a PC (30 percent on mobile) accessing social networking sites than any other type of site.
